Next-gen EVs; Toyota unveils Land Cruiser and Pickup concept vehicles

Toyota has been stepping up its efforts to create and manufacture BEVs in recent times to compete with EV-focused efforts from brands like Tesla and General Motors. In July, Toyota unveiled its electric roadmap, including a lineup of EVs with a cruising range exceeding 621 miles (1,000 kilometers).

To that extent, the Japanese automaker has now taken the wraps off the Toyota Land Cruiser Se, EPU Pickup EVs. Both are in their concept forms, with the former being a three-row electrified version of its iconic Land Cruiser. These are part of its lineup at the upcoming Japan Mobility Show 2023 that begins on October 25.

Rivian R1T becomes first EV to win the US’ longest off-road rally

Four teams using Rivian EVs were featured in the top 20 list, with 55 teams participating.

EVs are believed to be relatively less practical when compared to ICE vehicles. Limitations in range, charging time, and placement of a high-voltage system under the car often prevent users from pushing it to its limits.

Now, an EV has gone ahead and won the 2023 Rebelle Rally, the longest off-road rally conducted in the United States. The vehicle that achieved this feat was the Rivian R1T pickup truck, which made it the first all-electric to have won the 4X4 category of the rally since its inception in 2015.

Samsung SDI to supply EV batteries to Hyundai Motor starting 2026

SEOUL, Oct 23 (Reuters) — South Korea’s Samsung SDI (006400.KS) said on Monday it will supply Hyundai Motor (005380.KS) with electric vehicle (EV) batteries for seven years starting 2026, marking the first battery supply deal between the two companies.

“The latest supply deal marks the first ever partnership between Samsung and Hyundai Motor Group in the field of electric vehicle batteries,” Samsung SDI said in a statement.

The battery maker, which supplies to General Motors Co (GM.N), Stellantis (STLAM.MI), and BMW (BMWG.DE) among others, added that it will supply prismatic batteries manufactured at its factory in Hungary for Hyundai Motor’s EVs targeting the European market from 2026 through 2032.

Nvidia Gives Robotics A Major Upgrade

Nvidia has announced what the company called its “largest-ever platform expansion for Edge AI and Robotics,” and rightfully so. In typical Nvidia fashion, the company is bringing together years of work on several different software platforms to meet the needs of a very specific application – robotics. Nvidia has been developing solutions for robotics, or what should more appropriately be called autonomous machines, for more than a decade. He announcement includes adapting generative AI (GenAI) models to the Jetson Orin platform, the availability of Metropolis APIs and microservices for vision applications, the release of the latest Isaac ROS (Robot Operating System) framework and Isaac AMR (autonomous mobile robot) platform, and the release of the JetPack 6 software development kit (SDK). According to Nvidia, these releases include more value than all the other releases over the past 10 years combined. All the areas highlighted in green in the figure below are new or updated in this platform release.

One of the most significant enhancements is support for GenAI. As we at Tirias Research have indicated in previous articles, GenAI will be transformative for not just people, but also machines. Nvidia is working to enable zero-shot learning, which will enable devices to learn and predict results based on classes of data rather than being trained on specific samples. This will allow for shorter training cycles and more flexible interactions with and use of the resulting models. Nvidia is also predicting a new innovation cycle for autonomous machines as much of the learning shifts from text-based solutions to video or multi-modal (text, audio & video) training. Nvidia also included its new transformer PeopleNet model to increase the accuracy of people identification. But most important is the capability of the Orin platform to execute large language models (LLMs).
