  1. Costillo says:

A crewed colony mission to a superearth exoplanet will be a tall order! To ensure the needs of the crew and passengers are met, the habitation portion of the ship would need to be an O’Neill cylinder, which is basically a giant can shaped spacestead habitat. The classic O’Neill cylinder proposed size of 5 to 8 kilometres in diameter with a length of 20 or 30 kilometres would provide more than enough room for accommodating the 1000 or so people it would take to make a self sufficient travelling settlement genetically diverse enough to avoid inbreeding and the complications thereof, while also providing room for the population to quadruple. Included in this 256 — 1295 sqkm area would be farms (possibly supplemented by hydroponic vertical farms), one or more settlements, a forest or two, etc.
