Beyond AI: Building toward artificial consciousness — Part 2

Posted by in categories: robotics/AI, transportation

Beyond the hype surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) in the enterprise lies the next step—artificial consciousness. The first piece in this practical AI innovation series outlined the requirements for this technology, which delved deeply into compute power—the core capability necessary to enable artificial consciousness. This piece looks at the control and storage technologies and requirements that are not only necessary for enterprise AI deployment but also essential to achieve the state of artificial consciousness.

Controlling unprecedented compute power

While artificial consciousness is impossible without a dramatic rise in compute capacity, that is only part of the challenge. Organizations must harness that compute power with the proper control plane nodes—the familiar backbone of the high availability server clusters necessary to deliver that power. This is essential for managing and orchestrating complex computing environments efficiently.

Network properties determine neural network performance

Posted by in categories: information science, mapping, mathematics, mobile phones, robotics/AI, transportation

Machine learning influences numerous aspects of modern society, empowers new technologies, from Alphago to ChatGPT, and increasingly materializes in consumer products such as smartphones and self-driving cars. Despite the vital role and broad applications of artificial neural networks, we lack systematic approaches, such as network science, to understand their underlying mechanism. The difficulty is rooted in many possible model configurations, each with different hyper-parameters and weighted architectures determined by noisy data. We bridge the gap by developing a mathematical framework that maps the neural network’s performance to the network characters of the line graph governed by the edge dynamics of stochastic gradient descent differential equations. This framework enables us to derive a neural capacitance metric to universally capture a model’s generalization capability on a downstream task and predict model performance using only early training results. The numerical results on 17 pre-trained ImageNet models across five benchmark datasets and one NAS benchmark indicate that our neural capacitance metric is a powerful indicator for model selection based only on early training results and is more efficient than state-of-the-art methods.

Tesla confirms Robotaxi “unboxed” process, production in Giga Texas

Posted by in categories: Elon Musk, sustainability, transportation

Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed a number of key details about the Robotaxi during the company’s Q2 2024 Update Letter and earnings call. These include the site of the Robotaxi’s production, as well as the manufacturing process that would be used on the vehicle.

It would not be an exaggeration to state that the Robotaxi unveiling on October 10, 2024 is poised to be Tesla’s most important event this year. And considering Elon Musk’s noticeable focus on Full Self Driving (FSD), it was no surprise when several questions during the Q2 2024 earnings call were focused on the Robotaxi.

As per Tesla’s Q2 2024 Update Letter, its plans for new vehicles, including more affordable models, are still on track for the start of production in the first half of 2025. These vehicles will utilize aspects of its next-generation and current platforms, and they could be produced on the same manufacturing lines as the company’s current vehicle line-up. As for the Robotaxi, however, Tesla was clear.

Wearable sensors help athletes achieve greater performance

Posted by in categories: transportation, wearables

Today’s athletes are always on the lookout for new techniques and equipment to help them train more effectively. Modern coaches and sports trainers use intelligent data monitoring through videos and wearable sensors to help enhance athletic conditioning. However, traditional video analysis and wearable sensor technologies often fall short when tasked with producing a comprehensive picture of an athlete’s performance.

Researchers from Lyuliang University have developed a low-cost, flexible, and customizable sensor for badminton players that overcomes current constraints. The work is published in APL Materials.

Badminton is known for its many technical movements and the dynamic speed and precision required to play successfully. Monitoring the postures, footwork, arm swings, and shown by badminton players is limited by video shooting angles and the discomfort of rigid .

Catania airport closed: Flights cancelled or diverted due to Mt Etna

Posted by in category: transportation

Although many are being cancelled outright, some flights are being diverted to other airports in Sicily.

This is especially the case for flights that were already in the air when Catania airport was closed.

Don’t forget that Sicily is the biggest island in the Mediterranean. It is twice the size of Cyprus, a country in its own right, and it takes at least eight hours to drive all the way from east to west.

Hundreds of US flights are canceled for the 4th straight day. Here’s the latest on the global tech outage

Posted by in category: transportation

Hundreds of US flights were canceled Monday, as carriers, particularly Delta Air Lines, work to recover four days after a global tech outage caused massive delays and left travelers stranded at airports around the nation.

Delta is facing mounting pressure to get passengers back in the air, as it continues to rack up the majority of canceled US flights. US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has expressed frustration with the pace of Delta’s recovery and its CEO has apologized to affected travelers.

More than 900 flights into, within or out of the United States were canceled by midday Monday, and 3,100 flights were delayed, according to flight tracking site FlightAware. Delta passengers have been slammed by more than 4,500 cancellations since Friday, including 748 on Monday, by far the most of any airline.
