Rolls-Royce successfully tests hydrogen-powered jet engine
Posted by Josh Seeherman in categories: energy, transportation
LONDON, Nov 28 (Reuters) — Britain’s Rolls-Royce (RR.L) said it has successfully run an aircraft engine on hydrogen, a world aviation first that marks a major step towards proving the gas could be key to decarbonising air travel.
The ground test, using a converted Rolls-Royce AE 2100-A regional aircraft engine, used green hydrogen created by wind and tidal power, the British company said on Monday.
Rolls and its testing programme partner easyJet (EZJ.L) are seeking to prove that hydrogen can safely and efficiently deliver power for civil aero engines.

New magnetometer designed to be integrated into microelectronic chips
Posted by Saúl Morales Rodriguéz in categories: computing, engineering, mobile phones, transportation, wearables
Researchers at the UPC’s Department of Electronic Engineering have developed a new type of magnetometer that can be integrated into microelectronic chips and that is fully compatible with the current integrated circuits. Of great interest for the miniaturization of electronic systems and sensors, the study has been recently published in Microsystems & Nanoengineering.
Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) are electromechanical systems miniaturized to the maximum, so much so that they can be integrated into a chip. They are found in most of our day-to-day devices, such as computers, car braking systems and mobile phones. Integrating them into electronic systems has clear advantages in terms of size, cost, speed and energy efficiency. But developing them is expensive, and their performance is often compromised by incompatibilities with other electronic systems within a device.
MEMS can be used, among many others, to develop magnetometers—a device that measures magnetic field to provide direction during navigation, much like a compass—for integration into smartphones and wearables or for use in the automotive industry. Therefore, one of the most promising lines of work are Lorentz force MEMS magnetometers.

In a first, Rolls-Royce and easyJet successfully test a hydrogen-powered aircraft engine
Posted by Gemechu Taye in categories: energy, transportation
The test is a stepping stone to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
In what can be considered a promising first step towards transforming the aviation industry to become carbon-neutral, a project led by Rolls Royce and easyJet has successfully tested a modern-day jet engine that runs solely on hydrogen.
The prototype for the experiment, which was conducted at a test facility at the Ministry of Defence Boscombe Down, U.K., was a commonly-used Rolls-Royce AE-2100A regional aircraft engine. The turbine was supplied with ‘green’ hydrogen, which was made by splitting water into its constituent components at European Marine Energy Centre in the Orkney Islands, U.K.

For the first time, Tesla just completed a full load 500-mile trip with its Semi truck
Posted by Gemechu Taye in categories: Elon Musk, energy, sustainability, transportation
Tesla Semi carried 81,000 pounds for 500 miles on a single charge.
Just a few days before Tesla begins shipping the truck, Elon Musk has verified that Tesla Semi, the company’s Class 8 semi-truck, has successfully completed a crucial voyage.
Although there is no reason to question the outcome, it would be interesting to learn more about speed and energy usage. We are pretty interested in seeing some impartial vehicle tests.

Tesla sets up semiconductor joint venture with Swiss auto chip company
Posted by Genevieve Klien in categories: computing, sustainability, transportation
Tesla has plans to ramp its electric vehicle production by a notable degree in the coming years, and with the company’s constant innovations, it would need to secure a lot of resources, from battery raw materials to computer chips.
In this light, reports have emerged suggesting that Tesla has established a semiconductor joint venture in Jinan of eastern China’s Shandong Province. The joint venture is intended to supply automotive chip and electronics solutions. Tesla partnered with Swiss automotive semiconductor company Annex for the joint venture, which boasts a registered capital of $150 million.
As per a report from Chinese tech publication ijiwei, Tesla holds a 5% equity in the company for now, while Annex holds a 55% stake, and the Jinan Zurich Annex Equity Investment Fund Partnership holds a 40% stake. It should be noted that the Jinan Zurich fund acquired Annex this past June in a $5 billion deal.

Robotics Breakthrough Builds Anything
Posted by Kelvin Dafiaghor in categories: information science, robotics/AI, transportation
MIT researchers have devised an algorithm using voxels robotics devices to build anything from houses to planes to cars and even other robots by using a grid system that transfers knowledge to determine when to build what, and when to build other robot builders. New Google Deepmind video game artificial intelligence develops agents that can talk, listen, ask questions, navigate, search and retrieve information, control things, and do a range of other intelligent tasks in real-time. New Non-invasive brain computer interface device transmits information through optic nerve to compete with Neuralink BCI.

This Hydrogen-Powered Carcopter Is A Real-Life Star Wars Podracer
Posted by Kelvin Dafiaghor in categories: sustainability, transportation
Now, there’s another flying race car concept in the game. French startup Maca Flight revealed a new hydrogen-powered flying race car concept at the 2022 CES and it’s remarkably similar to the podracers in the Star Wars universe.
A green flying race car concept
Called a carcopter, a portmanteau of the words car and helicopter, Maca S11 is designed for speed and sustainability. And unlike others in its class, it’s powered by a hydrogen fuel cell instead of a conventional battery. The company states that the eVTOL is priced at just over $900,000 and that it will be ready to hit the racetrack in 2023.

Tesla phones an ‘alternative’ if Apple and Google ‘boot’ Twitter, Musk responds
Posted by Gemechu Taye in categories: business, Elon Musk, mobile phones, sustainability, transportation
The business mogul’s opening up to more ‘free speech’ on Twitter may have ruffled some feathers.
Elon Musk might have just hinted at making Tesla phones (Tesla Pi) a reality if Apple and Google were to “boot” Twitter from their app stores.
“If Apple & Google boot Twitter from their app stores, @elonmusk should produce his own smartphone,” Liz Wheeler, a video podcaster, said in a Twitter thread on Friday.
