In the first case of its kind, artificial intelligence (AI) will be present throughout an entire U.S. court proceeding, when it helps to defend against a speeding ticket.

San Francisco-based DoNotPay has developed “the world’s first robot lawyer” – an AI that can be installed on a mobile device. The company’s stated goal is to “level the playing field and make legal information and self-help accessible to everyone.”

Classical machine learning (ML) algorithms have proven to be powerful tools for a wide range of tasks, including image and speech recognition, natural language processing (NLP) and predictive modeling. However, classical algorithms are limited by the constraints of classical computing and can struggle to process large and complex datasets or to achieve high levels of accuracy and precision.

Enter quantum machine learning (QML).

OpenAI announced plans to release a ChatGPT Pro Version with expanded character capability and an artificial intelligence text generated detection system. Samsung announced at CES 2023 that it will release an AI powered home robot called the Ex-1 later this year. Researchers from Singapore have created a breakthrough robot arm gripper that is able to transform its surface area and shape like an elephant’s trunk to pick up any object.

VALL-E can mimic someone’s voice saying anything with just a three-second recording.

When genes are activated and expressed, they show patterns in cells that are similar in type and function across tissues and organs. Discovering these patterns improves our understanding of cells—which has implications for unveiling disease mechanisms.

The advent of spatial transcriptomics technologies has allowed researchers to observe gene expression in their spatial context across entire tissue samples. But new computational methods are needed to make sense of this data and help identify and understand these gene expression patterns.

A research team led by Jian Ma, the Ray and Stephanie Lane Professor of Computational Biology in Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Computer Science, has developed a machine learning tool to fill this gap. Their paper on the method, called SPICEMIX, appeared as the cover story in the most recent issue of Nature Genetics.
