SpaceX’s private control of satellite internet concerns military leaders: report

Posted by in categories: Elon Musk, internet, military, satellites

A number of military leaders around the world have expressed concerns to US officials over the dominance and control of SpaceX founder Elon Musk over satellite internet, according to a new report.

Over the past decade Musk’s SpaceX has changed the launch industry with its reusable Falcon 9 rocket. The company has pressed this advantage to establish itself as the leading player in satellite internet through Starlink.

New radar research overcomes nearly century-old trade-off between wavelength and distance resolution

Posted by in category: military

New interference radar functions employed by a team of researchers from Chapman University and other institutions improve the distance resolution between objects using radar waves. The results may have important ramifications in military, construction, archaeology, mineralogy and many other domains of radar applications.

This first proof-of-principle experiment opens a new area of research with many possible applications that can be disruptive to the multi-billion dollar radar industry. There are many new avenues to pursue both in theory and experiment.

The discovery addresses a nine decades-old problem that requires scientists and engineers to sacrifice detail and resolution for observation distance—underwater, underground, and in the air. The previous bound limited the distance estimated between objects to be one quarter of the of radio waves; this technology improves the distance resolution between objects using radar waves.

China curbs drone exports, citing invasion of Ukraine and concerns about military use

Posted by in categories: drones, government, military

BEIJING (AP) — China imposed restrictions Monday on exports of long-range civilian drones, citing Russia’s war in Ukraine and concern that drones might be converted to military use.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s government is friendly with Moscow but says it is neutral in the 17-month-old war. It has been stung by reports that both sides might be using Chinese-made drones for reconnaissance and possibly attacks.

Export controls will take effect Tuesday to prevent use of drones for “non-peaceful purposes,” the Ministry of Commerce said in a statement. It said some drone exports still will be allowed.

To Avoid War, the U.S. Should Increase Its Nuclear Arsenal

Posted by in categories: government, military

Arms reduction is a noble goal, but it’s not one being pursued by some of the worst regimes in the world. The late George Shultz, former secretary of state for Ronald Reagan and a Cold Warrior, once advised against proliferating nuclear weapons. He quipped that “proliferation begets proliferation,” which the arms control lobby has used for decades to prevent the U.S. government from developing nukes.

2014 August Breaking News USA Military DARPA Transhumanism Super humans Humanoids

This is older but this is just the tip of the iceberg. China is rumored to be working on genetic engineering to create “super soldiers” and they’re one country that isn’t stopped by ethics concerns. In the Prime TV series “The peripheral” it has something similar and I don’t want to spoil it beyond that. I think there’s a Vin Diesel movie called Blood Shot where he’s made into a super soldier. It’s a shame that this is used for warfare but the plus side is it’ll, some of the tech, will make its way down to civilian life such as the Internet did.

How artificial intelligence is helping scientists talk to animals — BBC News

Posted by in categories: information science, military, robotics/AI

Here’s a better use for AI than warfare, which coming from a military family I see as a sad but necessary thing seeing as how Russia likes to invade people lately, but I hope we can keep peace with China, but anyway I’ve always loved animals. They called me Dr Dolittle as a child because I played with animals a lot. I hope for world peace. Perhaps AI can help diplomats communicate better as well. I know, you’d think we’d be able to but it doesn’t seem to be the case.

Scientists are harnessing the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to decode animal languages.

Covid was created by Chinese military scientist before Wuhan lab leak as US spies probe bombshell claims, says author

Posted by in categories: biotech/medical, military

US spies are probing whether Covid was created by a Chinese military scientist before it leaked from a Wuhan lab, according to reports.

Zhou Yusen, who worked for the People’s Liberation Army, filed a patent for a Covid vaccine before the pandemic was declared — and mysteriously died just weeks later.

Zhou, 54, worked alongside researchers at the under-fire Wuhan Institute of Virology — the lab at the centre of the storm over a possible lab leak.

What is PHASA-35? Cutting edge stratosphere drone passes key test in U.S.

Posted by in categories: drones, military, robotics/AI, sustainability

A new solar-powered high-altitude drone has successfully navigated a stratospheric test, opening the door to a new set of possibilities for unmanned vehicles, not least in modern warfare.

The PHASA-35 solar and battery-powered unmanned aerial system reached an altitude of 66,000 feet during a 24-hour test flight launched from New Mexico in June, British defense giant BAE Systems said in mid-July.

The stratospheric test, which comes after the system’s maiden flight back in 2020, “marks a significant milestone” in the development program started in 2018, BAE said in a press release.

Research team develops a washable, transparent, and flexible OLED with MXene nanotechnology

Posted by in categories: computing, health, military, nanotechnology

Transparent and flexible displays, which have received a lot of attention in various fields including automobile displays, bio–health care, military, and fashion, are in fact known to break easily when experiencing small deformations. To solve this problem, active research is being conducted on many transparent and flexible conductive materials such as carbon nanotubes, graphene, silver nanowires, and conductive polymers.

A joint research team led by Professor Kyung Cheol Choi from the KAIST School of Electrical Engineering and Dr. Yonghee Lee from the National Nano Fab Center (NNFC) announced the successful development of a water-resistant, transparent, and flexible OLED using MXene nanotechnology. The material can emit and transmit light even when exposed to water.

This research was published as a front cover story of ACS Nano under the title “Highly Air-Stable, Flexible, and Water-Resistive 2D Titanium Carbide MXene-Based RGB Organic Light-Emitting Diode Displays for Transparent Free-Form Electronics.”

Map shows how you would be affected by a nuclear bomb

Posted by in categories: existential risks, military

A rather macabre interactive map demonstrates how the area you live in would be impacted if a nuclear bomb were to hit it. Nuclear war is as big a talking point these days as it ever has been. Advert With Russia and Ukraine still at war, Russian President Vladimir Putin has made some not-so-veiled threats about nuclear weapon use.
