Ascendance proposes a long-range, low-emission hybrid VTOL air taxi

Posted by in categories: energy, sustainability, transportation

Right now, the entire electric VTOL scene is a house built on a foundation of faith. Faith that the hordes of researchers beavering away on next-gen battery technology will achieve an enormous energy density breakthrough, or faith that hydrogen fuel cell powertrains will prove safe, reliable and practical in an aviation context.

Both seem likely, eventually, but the urban air taxi industry is pushing to be up and running within five years, and right now there’s no powertrain on the market that can keep these energy-intensive vertical-lift birds in the air long enough to be practical in a commercial sense.

France’s Ascendance sees an opportunity for an intermediate step. The company was founded by four ex-Airbus employees who worked on the groundbreaking E-Fan project, which back in 2015 became the first electric aircraft to cross the English Channel. Now, the team is working on a hybrid initiative to make long-range, low-emissions VTOL flight a reality even before the battery and hydrogen guys make their breakthroughs.

Sunnyvale Hydrogen Station Opens in California

Posted by in categories: energy, transportation

The Sunnyvale True Zero station, located in Silicon Valley, was developed by FirstElement Fuel. It will be open 24 hours a day and is located at 1296 Sunnyvale Saratoga Road, Sunnyvale, CA 94087. The price of hydrogen is $13.08 per kilogram.

The Sunnyvale hydrogen station capacity is 1600 kilograms and has four fueling positions with a total of five nozzles (four H70 nozzles and one H35 nozzle). It is one of the first hydrogen stations in California serving passenger cars to have four fueling positions and capacity up to six times the size of earlier hydrogen stations. The next-largest stations for passenger cars are similar include the True Zero station in Fountain Valley that opened in July and the True Zero station in Oakland, with more than 800 kilograms. It opened in late 2019.

This station will be able to fuel three cars simultaneously, increasing the number of vehicles served in a shorter time. This and future stations like it will help meet the needs of the growing fuel cell passenger car market in Silicon Valley and the greater Bay areas and across California.
