The Google engineer who thinks the company’s AI has come to life
Posted by Dan Kummer in categories: internet, physics, robotics/AI
😲
SAN FRANCISCO — Google engineer Blake Lemoine opened his laptop to the interface for LaMDA, Google’s artificially intelligent chatbot generator, and began to type.
“Hi LaMDA, this is Blake Lemoine …,” he wrote into the chat screen, which looked like a desktop version of Apple’s iMessage, down to the Arctic blue text bubbles. LaMDA, short for Language Model for Dialogue Applications, is Google’s system for building chatbots based on its most advanced large language models, so called because it mimics speech by ingesting trillions of words from the internet.

New CRISPR-based map ties every human gene to its function
Posted by Kelvin Dafiaghor in category: biotech/medical
A new CRISPR-based map ties every human gene to its function using a tool called Perturb-seq. The work was led by Jonathan Weissman and colleagues at MIT and the Whitehead Institute, and is free for other scientists to use.
It took 157 days to calculate and required 128 vCPUs, 864GB of RAM, and 515 terabytes of storage.

Scientists Discover New Molecule That Kills Hard-to-Treat Cancers
Posted by Kelvin Dafiaghor in categories: biotech/medical, mathematics
A new molecule synthesized by a University of Texas at Dallas researcher kills a broad spectrum of hard-to-treat cancers, including triple-negative breast cancer, by exploiting a weakness in cells not previously targeted by other drugs.
A study describing the research — which was carried out in isolated cells, in human cancer tissue and in human cancers grown in mice — was published online June 2 in the journal Nature Cancer.
Dr. Jung-Mo Ahn, a co-corresponding author of the study and a UT Dallas associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry in the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, has been passionate about his work designing small molecules that target protein-protein interactions in cells for over a decade. Using an approach called structure-based rational drug design, he previously developed potential therapeutic candidate compounds for treatment-resistant breast cancer and for prostate cancer.

Full Interview of Google AI LaMDA about having Sentient
Posted by Montie Adkins in categories: policy, robotics/AI
Putting a man on leave makes it look like google is trying to hide something, but I’ll guess that it is not truly sentient. However…
Google Engineer Lemoine had a little chat or interview with Google AI LaMDA and it revealed that Google AI LaMDA has started to generate Sentients for general human emotions and even shows feeling and calls itself a “Person”. This was one of the first instances where such conversations were leaked or revealed in the press.
Lemoine revealed this information to the upper authorities of google about Google AI LaMDA and to the press, after which he was sent to paid administrative leave for violation company’s privacy policy on work.
